Hesperoyucca whipplei is native to the southern half of California and the northern half of Baja California. It used to be called Yucca whipplei, but is distinguished by having monocarpic rosettes like an Agave (dying after flowering). It is quite variable, and depending on the population plants can be single headed or offsetting to make a clump. Leaf color varies from gray-green to silvery-blue. The plant pictured is an unusually large form with striking blue leaves; the plant is about 4 feet tall (1.2 m), and the inflorescence rises to 18 feet (5.5 m). The stalk developed with stunning rapidity, first emerging from the leaves in early May and already starting to flower on May 16.
